What is Discernment Counseling?
Discernment counseling is a brief, structured approach to helping couples who are uncertain about the future of their relationship.
Unlike traditional couples therapy, where the focus is on improving communication, rebuilding connection, and working through relationship difficulties, discernment counseling focuses first on the decision itself.
You may find yourselves in different places. One partner may be leaning toward ending the relationship, while the other wants to preserve it. Sometimes both partners feel uncertain but for very different reasons.
Rather than asking you to immediately commit to working on the relationship, discernment counseling creates room to explore what has happened, how each of you has contributed to the relationship's current difficulties, and what you would need in order to move forward.
This isn't about assigning blame or deciding who is right. It's about developing a more complete understanding of your relationship, your individual experiences, and the possibilities ahead.
Who Might Benefit From Discernment Counseling?
Discernment counseling may be helpful when:
One partner wants to work on the relationship while the other is considering separation or divorce.
You feel caught between wanting things to change and wondering whether you've reached your limit.
You've tried couples therapy before but aren't sure you want to continue investing in the relationship.
You feel stuck in a cycle of conflict, disconnection, or disappointment.
You are questioning whether the relationship can become something different from what it has been.
You want to make a decision about your future without acting solely from frustration, fear, or pressure.
You want to understand your own role in the relationship patterns before deciding what comes next.
You don't need to be in complete agreement about the future of your relationship to begin this process. In fact, the difference in where each partner stands is often what brings couples to discernment counseling.
Exploring Three Possible Paths
Discernment counseling isn't designed to lead every couple toward the same outcome. There isn't one right answer, and the goal isn't necessarily to keep a relationship together.
The process helps you explore three possible directions.
